Chandelier

In the photo to the left is a chandelier. I took this image because it display an a-line silhouette through the metal poles. On the right is a dress from Marchese Fall 2008 RTW, it has a sharp angle like the "A" that illustrates how an a-line would look like. 

Palmolive

I notice the palmolive oxy dash detergent bottle had a curve similar to a hourglass silhouette. So I took an image of it and compared it to Giambattista Valli Fall 2011 RTW dress. This silhouette is quite appealing because it emphasis a woman body parts. The hourglass silhouette balance and define each body parts. It equals the shoulders and hip with obvious waist indentation. 

Salt and Pepper shaker

At times the cafeteria food is plain and without these two shakers there would not be any flavors to my dinner. What I noticed about these two shakers is that it has ripples or a repeated fold to the shakers and it has an a-line silhouettes. The top is a little narrow then it widens near the bottom. To complete my shakers image is an Azzaro Spring 2011 RTW design. If you look at the models neck, the dress starts off narrow and is tightly secure to her neck. Also the garment becomes loose after that point and shows no indentation of waist. This silhouette features no body shape but can give the wearer a goddess look. 

Organic Flowers

So how does flower and Vivienne Westwood Fall 2010 RTW relate with each other? Well, when I took the pictures of the flowers, it reminded me of organic shapes. And in Vivienne Westwood designs, the construction is more free flowing and it hardly has geometric shapes. Going back to the flowers, is has many curve lines and obviously it is nature. The dress also has many curves because of the draping technique used. Also the head piece resembles to a flower.  

Ipod Silhouette

The Ipod seen in the center of the image is my favorite technology! It is protected by a black rubber case and invisible cover. While charging my Ipod, it reminded me of tubular silhouettes like the designs seen on both sides. On the left is a design from GiambattistaValli Fall 2011 RTW and on the right is Karl Lagerfeld Fall 2009 RTW. Both designs are a great example of tubular silhouettes because of the narrow construction and little indentation of waistline. Tubular silhouettes are commonly shapeless and resembles to a cylinder like form. Although, my Ipod is not round but the flat dimension reflects the front view of these two great designs.

Origami

One of the most interesting designs I find is origami intertwined with clothing piece. In Issey Miyake Fall 2011 RTW collection (image to the left), it incorporated origami like the image to the right from The Japanese Culture Blog. In these origami figures, there are different shapes like triangle, pentagons, and diamonds to form an object. It seems like Issey Miyake took those same concept and created clothing pieces. Also these designs maintain silhouettes; bell, wedge, hourglass, tubular, and a-line. For example, the design all the way to the left is bell and the middle design is wedge. 

Lamp Cover

Here is an image of my lamp cover which I flipped upside down. I wanted to illustrate a wedge silhouette, which is the opposite of an a-line silhouette. Instead the greater width is in the upper body than lower, like a "V" shape. I used a design from Louis Vuittton Spring 2011 to demonstrate how a wedge silhouette looks like. As you can see, the sleeves emphasis the width in the upper body and it narrows down, completing the v-shape form. With this particular shape, it is commonly seen in blazers and padded shoulders tops. 

Sculpture from Charlotte Museum

Another silhouette I wanted to share is the bell silhouette. The image in the center is an art sculpture or vase that I take at Charlotte Art Museum in 2008. The shape of this sculpture widens around the mid-point, which defines a bell silhouette. To the left of the sculpture is a design from Alexander McQueen Spring 2011 collection and on the other sides is Oscar de la Resort 2011. Both dresses depict the fullness in hip and falling straight towards the floor.  

Shadows

The photo to the left are shadows of tree branches and a large window frame that I took on a wall. It goes well with Dries Van Noten Fall 20ll RTW design. I wanted to illustrate the arrangement of shapes in patterns they both depict. I like how the window frame creates a separation, which makes it orderly but at the same it is random. The same can be seen in Dries Van Noten dress from the different fabric print that are combined next to each other. This mix-matching structure also displays a separation between each organic and random patterns.

Lamp Post

I was walking around campus and I noticed the structure of this lamp post (image above). It reminded me of a straw hat. Therefore, I took a picture of it and found a straw hat from Eugenia Kim Straw Hats: Honey. Even though the lamp post is not round like the straw hat, it has a similar resembles of a full crown; the part that is extended and creates a shade. The quality of both shape express an attitude towards the pressure and weight, which influences the balance of the structure.  

So what is shape?

Shape can be described in varies way, such as, the boundary, surface, and interior. A shape has a certain size and occurs in space. It has a relationship of proportion to other things around it and if there are multiple shapes in a form. Then there are various relationship created between them.
